I chose Marian Anderson's Set of Jigs (Famous Baravan) because that music made me want to get up and dance. Sorry folks - YouTube is claiming our video of Carding of the Wool is either hijacking their customers, demanding money from viewers, sending spam, unconstitutionally constraining national voting rights, or is in someway inappropriate. Thanks to the Band - Without music that lifts you and you can fly to… what's the point?
So Sharlene, thank you! And to Jenny Evans and Amy Beshara the fiddle players Sharlene found. You were great!
So is NJ's Rerr Terr.

So it is Ball Prep. Dances taught were:-

Dale Birdsall's Montréal Rendezvous and Rhodes' Bottoms Up are the only dances that were not personally known to me before this season. Montréal Rendezvous was picked for the Rerr Terr and Sandra picked Bottoms Up for our Tea Dance. All the dances are fun, have good tunes or positive redeeming social value of some kind.
Miss Janet Laing's Strathspey:- The Story: People are claiming this is a HARD dance. They are correct. Sandra is pointing her finger at me and saying I am at fault. I, in turn, am pointing my finger at her as the main culprit. It was on her short list.

At fault was our timing. She sent me a short list of dances for consideration. Miss Janet was one of those dances. She has a daughter in GB who was recently married and expecting her first child. Sandra spent time visiting. Rather a lot of that time during the critical phase of the program development, out of touch, and ultimately I had to choose. It was on her list so I went with it. Ta da! Here it is… Oh! You hadn't actually danced it? You liked how it read? Oops. Oh well.

The dance is in the 4.5 to 5 out of 5 in difficulty. Tight timing is needed to get the circles to flow.
A real challenger - and you could use it if you need to humble an advanced class who are good (and know it). But I love the conceit of the first 16 bars and the subsequent circles to get you home.

Just to clear up a question that might be asked after looking at the Tea Dance program- Why so many dances from New Zealand and Book 52?

Firstly the band leader is Sharlene Penman who is from New Zealand and secondly Book 52 is chock full of winners, recently published and I have appointed myself one of its ambassadors.

Beach Dancer - (32 J 3) - a New Zealander
The Aviator - (32 J 3) - Bk 52
Farewell to Balfour Road - (32 J 5) - Bk 52
From Paper to Pearl - (32 S 3) - a New Zealander
But not an immediate deep immersion into ball prep.

Dances taught:-

Bethankit - (32 J 3) - Graded Bk 3
Invercauld's Reel - (32 S 3) - Bk 21
The Atholl Reel - (32 R 2) - Let's All Dance 1 (Trew)
Broadway - (32 S 3/3L) - Ronald
Rendez-vous à Vichy - (32 J 3) - Paris 1 (Latour)
Duke of Atholl's Reel - (32 J 2) - Bk 16
Triple Happiness - (32 S 3/3L) - Bk 52
Shadow - (32 J 3/3L) - Bk 50 (Thompson)
Montgomeries' Rant - (32 R 3) - Bk 10

Bethankit:- warmup dance right? How about I don't like what I am seeing in their handing, especially in Rights&Lefts. Practice? I wish. Teaching! Seriously? Yes, seriously. :-(

Invercauld's Reel:- Because just because. The music mostly & because it is std. repertoire.

The Atholl Reel:- Pure dead simple (with R&L).

Broadway:- Diagonal R&L following Set&Link3. Beautiful! Two thumbs up.

Rendez-vous à Vichy:- Because I saw some of the videos and they were gorgeous. Also because a young man has moved to New Haven from Paris and is dancing, and his wife Pascaline (who is still in Paris) wrote the music for several of the dances in this book. And I like the dance. Thumbs up.

Shadow:- A Shetland style reel. Three tandem couples reeling! Another reason why I thought the original RSCDS description of the Pelorus Jack reels was a huge mistake! Glad they saw the light.Peter1672http://www.blogger.com/profile/12451615924473583098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7467231768124412756.post-25364866344222044222020-01-19T22:04:00.000-05:002020-01-19T22:04:26.372-05:0023 March 2019 -- New HavenTime is marching on and the Tea Dance is fast approaching. That means "ball prep" and I need to avoid burning out and becoming absolutely sick of the dances before hand and that is true every year.

The dances I taught were:

Carols A Plenty - (32 J 3) - Lou Hanson
Sugar Candie - (32 S 3) - Bk 26
Corrievreckan - (128 M 4sq) - Carnforth 4 (Boswell)
Farewell to Balfour Road - (32 J 5canon) - Bk 52
Bon Viveur - (64 M 4sq) - Bk 52
Lucy Campbell - (32 R 2_ - Bk 17

——— ±±± ——— ≠≠≠ —— ± —— ≠≠≠ ——— ±±± ———

Carols A Plenty:- Pretty Darn Simple Jig. Good to warm up the brain and the body.

Sugar Candie:- A golden oldie. It has never before been on a K&G program. It was past time and I always need a balance between old vs new and inSociety vs outSociety dances.

Corrievreckan:- Fun! Unusual! I learned it from Keira & Marc Hartstein who had one of the Westchester class series and were doing a square each week. This one is a winner and I need to keep it fresh in mind so I can pull a 'surprise'.

Farewell to Balfour Road:- A canon a la The Dundee City Police Jig - a new couple starts at the top every 16 bars (half dance) with each round taking 32 bars. I remember the first time it was taught and the teacher had each couple walk it once through in sequence. It had to be the most tedious dance in creation (so I thought) and then, oh then, he canonized it and it zoomed onto the top 50 list.

Bon Viveur:- A nice 'simple' square if you consider schiehallion reels simple. And I do. They are merely a chase. The women chase their partners while their partners chase after that 'other' woman. In other words yet another winner from Book 52.

Lucy Campbell:- Sandra and I have agreed to differ on this one. I like it while she is less than enthralled. It is an older dance. It doesn't have that modern flow. It involves counting in fractions and that throws some people for a loop. Think while dancing? OMG! What a horrible thing to do to us! :-)

Peter1672http://www.blogger.com/profile/12451615924473583098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7467231768124412756.post-66523384148176698672020-01-12T20:35:00.000-05:002020-01-12T20:35:42.993-05:0026 February 2019_New HavenBall season has arrived - Upcoming are The New Haven Highland Ball Weekend; The NJ Rerr Terr; Kilts and Ghillies Tea Dance; Pawling Weekend and then summer.

The dances I taught were:-

Bethankit – (32 J 3) – Stacey -RSCDS 3rd Graded
Left-Handed Fiddler – (32 R 3) – Lasnik
Miss Florence Adams – (32 S 3) – Drewry - Bk 38/7
Sunshine and Sweetie's Jig – (32 J 3) – Bk 48/7
Born to Dance – (32 J 3) – Collin: From Paper to Pearl

<< –– >> << –– >> << –– >> << –– >> << –– >>

Bethankit:- "and the good Lord bethankit" - nice easy (if reels are easy) gentle starter.

Miss Florence Adams:- Because it long past time to reintroduce it!

I included this on a New Haven Ball shortly after it was published and all I got was a load of s**t! "Too Hard" was the kindest comment. And not the dance - the whole program! Looking back on that program I can see that it was, well… staid and boring at best. This was the only difficult dance on the program but it stained the whole evening. And I now can see why they thought that.

Firstly - it was a Drewry dance and we know that all Drewry dances are hard.
Secondly- it included a NEW figure. Set and Link, just invented and a lot of it. Thumbs down!
Thirdly- it had yet another NEW figure - Corners Pass & Turn. Double thumbs down!!
Fourthly- that combination had a synergy that added up to NOT good.

And most of those dancers haven't danced it since. They "know" how hard a dance it is and would not!

Twenty years later how many dances now include Set & Link? How many times have you done Corners Pass & Turn? How hard is this dance with all that experience under your belt?
I was just ahead of my time.Peter1672http://www.blogger.com/profile/12451615924473583098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7467231768124412756.post-72648523872940314592020-01-12T20:01:00.002-05:002020-01-12T20:01:59.238-05:00Burns Night - Westchester 2019It has been almost a full year since I have posted. Time to fix that.

The program was simple, and some dances were there only because the music has a Burns connection.

We danced the following:-

The Loch Ness Monster - (32 R 1circle) - Iain Boyd
Sky Top Jig - (32 J 2/3L) - Houghton
Gay Gordons Two Step (ceilidh)
The Lea Rig - (32 S 2) - Bk 21/5

Driving Through Eutaw - (32 J 3) - D. Leary

The Lea Rig - the wonderful traditional music. It was time to resurrect the dance. It was overdone 30 years ago but the newer dancers have never heard of it.

Driving Through Eutaw:- was written to Ye Banks and Braes (Burns CD by Marian Anderson)
and it is a good dance, with a twist.

A Man's a Man for a' That:- a traditional Burns? - The dance is less than stellar, the music is classic!Peter1672http://www.blogger.com/profile/12451615924473583098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7467231768124412756.post-25862134933783535032019-07-23T12:01:00.000-04:002019-07-23T12:05:41.780-04:0029 January 2019_New HavenI presented the following dances:

Mrs Stewart's Jig - (32 J 3) - 35/11
Miss Janet Laing's Strathspey - (32 S 4) - 22/11 (Cramb)
Well Met in Paris - (32 H 3) - Glasspool
From Paper to Pearl - (32 S 3) - Collin
Mrs Stewart Linnell - (40 R 3) - Imperial 3 (Bayly)

«=» «=» «=» «=» «=» «= + =» «=» «=» «=» «=» «=»

Mrs Stewart's Jig:- Easy Peasy and now a part of the standard repertoire.

Miss Janet Laing's Strathspey:- It is on the K&G program. The dancers need to know it. Oh my poor aching head! SB is pointing her finger at me and I am pointing my finger at her, and honestly, I need to laugh.

When they finally get the circle thing it will be a nice dance. Will it be worth the effort? I am not sure. But the dance demands that the dancers rise above their usual. Demanding a stretch from dancers -- can it be a bad thing?

Well Met in Paris:- I had to. I truly had no choice. We have a new (to us) dancer in the class. He is from Paris, teaching at Yale, and his wife was visiting. Newly married, and… they met in Paris.

And the dance is in my top 50. It is indeed that good. The crossing by 2C to enter the reels of 3 on their own sides is just that needed hint of hot pepper that balances the meal.

From Paper to Pearl:- 👍 From Gaye Collin in NZ. Nice dance but even better, it is satisfying for everyone. I only show one thumb but actually there are enough thumbs for the dance to be on the K&G program

Mrs Stewart Linnell:- I taught this years ago and considered it difficult enough that I haven't been willing to teach it to any of my current classes. I am just a wimp - but enough of that!

The heart of the dance is a sequence. A quick one. you don't have time to consider things you need to move it. You need to complete the half reel passing by left shoulders in the middle before you take left hands and turn 3/4! The math becomes a wee bit convoluted if you take hands early and remember the 3/4 turn thing!

It works. Really! It works. Well enough that I have found in on ball programs from the UK from when they didn't talk dances through.

I give it two thumbs up: 👍 👍 Peter1672http://www.blogger.com/profile/12451615924473583098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7467231768124412756.post-24158025334281841502019-07-23T11:02:00.001-04:002019-07-23T11:02:39.069-04:0019 December 2018_WestchesterUpcoming events: Hogmany; Burns Night (everywhere!); New Haven Ball; Rerr Terr Ball; Kilts and Ghilllies Tea Dance; Boston Ball; and Pawling. And that is many of but certainly not all of what is coming.

So does the burden, no lets be honest here, the tyranny of ball prep seem to hover over all of our shoulders? I am reminded of the story about the sword of Damocles.

Enough of that and on to nicer thoughts.

The dances I presented tonight were:

Bottoms Up - (32 J 3/3L) - Rhodes
Itchy Feet - (32 J 3) - Walton
Christmas Candy - (32 S 3) - McKinnell
The Clansman - (32 R 2) - 32/8 (Haynes)
The Lea Rig - (32 S 2) - 21/5

-†- = -†- + -†- = -†- + -†- = -†- + + + -†- = -†- + -†- = -†- + -†- = -†-

Bottoms Up:- Suggested by my co-conspirator SB for the Kilts and Ghillies Tea Dance. I never heard of it before so I needed to try it. It is a good wee simple dance but I found myself losing count which I usually don't do. So, rating? How does "Interesting" fit?

Itchy Feet:- This dance is becoming popular locally. It is fairly simple with only Set&Link3 to worry about.

Christmas Candy:- I do not know now why I picked up on this dance but it has that 'something" on reading. I know we didn't choose it for the K&G program but there are many reasons why dances don't make a cut that usually have nothing to do with the quality of the dance. This one just made it back on my "For Consideration" list.

The Clansman:- Just because. It is on the NY Branch dance list and NY dancers need to be familiar with it.

The Lea Rig:- Because I haven't done it or even seen it on a local program in a good 20 years!
Yes it was a bit over done. But there are so many newer dances who have never seen it and the music os too good to get lost. Just because I remember being burned out on it is not sufficient justification for never ever doing it again. And the repose was suitably positive. So there!Peter1672http://www.blogger.com/profile/12451615924473583098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7467231768124412756.post-20346311426191615052019-07-20T14:12:00.000-04:002019-07-20T14:12:41.730-04:0027 November 2018_New HavenStill prepping both Drewry Night and the April Kilts and Ghillies Tea Dance!

Beach Dancer - (32 J 3) - E. West
Belle of Bon Accord - (32 S 4) - Drewry
The Hazel Tree - (32 J 3) - Drewry
Peter's Mermaid - (32 S 3) - Katt
Ferla Mor - (32 R 3) - Drewry
Driving Through Eutaw - (32 J 3) - Leary

Beach Dancer:- another nice Eddy West dance suggested by Sharlene Penman. And that zesty little chase gets them every time!

Peter's Mermaid:- Wendy has been working hard - this is the 5th or 6th iteration. This one!
And it is enough different. Coming Real Soon Now (to channel Jerry Pournelle).

Ferla Mor:- I hate it. Oh!– not the dance, just the way it is so often danced. The upraised arms and supposedly eerie sounds! Not good! The grey man is the person you sense following you, but when you turn and look – isn't there!

Oh well.

Driving Through Eutaw:- By Deborah and in the New Haven Ruby Collection. Asymmetrical, which blows many a mind, but I like that!Peter1672http://www.blogger.com/profile/12451615924473583098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7467231768124412756.post-84283871883696052412019-07-20T13:38:00.000-04:002019-07-20T13:38:45.199-04:0026 November 2018_ScotiaComing Real Soon Now _ Drewry Night. And I have had enough. I taught three dances from the program, then onto two dances from the K&G tea dance - one of them a real stinker!

Ranadan-ce - (32 R 3) - Drewry
Bob Campbell - (32 S 3) - Drewry
Major Ian Stewart - (32 J 3) - Bk 35 (Drewry)
Miss Janet Laing's Strathspey - (32 S 4) - Bk 22 (Cramb)
Trip to Timber Ridge - (32 R 3) - Bk 52 (L. Henderson)

¢¢$ – $¢¢ - ¢¢$ – $¢¢ - ¢¢$ – $¢¢ - ¢¢$ – $¢¢ - ¢¢$ – $¢¢

Ramadan-ce:- It is (almost) all about the recorded music. It is so much fun! I like John's solution to the timing on bars 13-16 - there isn't enough time to turn RH twice around and too much time to turn only once. So, essentially, he says "figure it out". Me, I like to birl and go three, or even four, times round. Recommended, but not every week!

Bob Campbell:- It is a Drewry dance. Not one of his best but approachable by most. Faint praise?

Major Ian Stewart:- It has now become a standard. What I like is the rewards that good dancers get. It doable by fair dancers, it shines for good dancers - they get the eye contact and partnership rewards.

Miss Janet Laing's Strathspey:- H#@y Cow! What superb dancers-teachers can come up with boggles the mind! The opening 16 bars are nice - the following circles are nightmares! The standard of dancing required verges on the professional. Sloppy? Forget it! Impeccable? Maybe!

Trip to Timber Ridge:- Glorious!Peter1672http://www.blogger.com/profile/12451615924473583098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7467231768124412756.post-24664042230300185472019-07-20T12:59:00.001-04:002019-07-20T12:59:53.632-04:0019 November 2018_ScotiaThis week I was doing prep for both Drewry Night and my own Kilts and Ghillies Tea Dance (coming in April).

Kamo Karousel - (32 J 3) - Eddy West (NZ)
Bees of Maggieknockater - (32 J 4) - Drewry
Belle of Bon Accord - (32 S 4) - Drewry
Glenalmond Gamekeeper - (40 R 3) - Drewry
Balgownie Brig - (32 S 3 ) - Drewry
The Spinning Wheel - (32 J - Let's All Dance Too

+* - *+ * +*-*+ * +*-*+ * +*-*+ * +*-*+ - +*-*+

Kamo Karousel:- Nice dance. From NZ devised by Eddy West. On the K&G program for two good reasons. First: it is a good dance. Second the bandleader is Sharlene Penman who also is from NZ (and she recommended it).
Currently my "problem" is that, given the necessary prep for the 2020 K&G dance there are too many good dances just don't fit into the time constraints and drop through the cracks. This one deserves to be repeated and I keep failing get it in.

Bees of Maggieknockater:- in the local repertoire, and a multi-year choice for the Drewry Night program. When danced well it is beautiful. As usually danced it is not so nice, actually kind of messy.
My key to the dance is the letting go have hands when in the promenade reels of three.

If you wait until you are in the middle of the dance and are directly face-to-face with your next "partner" it is too late!! IMHO the best time to release promenade hold is bar 3-ish - when you are either on the sidelines or on the ends of the set - before you actually meet. Think bars 1 and 8 of lead down the middle and up.

Belle of Bon Accord:- It's a nice one. Rewards good dancing.

Glenalmond Gamekeeper:- I remember John teaching this dance when he visited New Haven. It took a while. He was a bit too particular with his wording, which he understood. He didn't have any alternative phrases/wording to fall back on.

Balgownie Brig:- In this one he bends the usual almost beyond recognition. Be prepared to teach!
It was my experience that it works, quite nicely actually (don't most of his?) but I didn't get the sense that the dancers loved it and really really wanted to do it again.

Maybe when there is no ball prep pressure?

Sla'ine's Fancy (The Spinning Wheel):- Nice, simple, easy peasy jig. Good to have in your back pocket.Peter1672http://www.blogger.com/profile/12451615924473583098noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7467231768124412756.post-48344162562967826472019-07-20T12:11:00.003-04:002019-07-20T12:11:55.045-04:005 November 2018_ScotiaSurging toward us with a rattle and a roar is Drewry Night, an early December program of John Drewry dances.

Tonights program with come leavening):

Orpington Caaledonians - (32 R 3) - Bk 49/2
Hazel Tree - (32 J 3) - John Drewry
Blooms of Bon Accord - (32 R 4) - John Drewry
The Aviator - (32 J 3) - Bk 52/9 (K. Fischer)
Triple Happiness - (32 S 3/3L) - Bk 52/10
The Sailor - (32 H 3) - Bk 24/4

Nothing of any real importance.

Orpington Caledonians:- asymmetrical. Good for the brains!

Hazel Tree:- local repertoire and it too breaks with muscle memory.

The Aviator:- Why? Because I love it! When the 1C cover the peel off
reels and turns it is just the best!

Triple Happiness:- not bad. Not my favourite but it is a fairly easy peasy go to dance. And somewhere in here I needed a strathspey.

The Sailor:- a nice known doable dance for an ender.Peter1672http://www.blogger.com/profile/12451615924473583098noreply@blogger.com0
